Your first step

Try Kendo

We organise beginner courses a few times per year, and it is always possible to come and watch a practice. Just email or call us first to check the schedule.

What a beginner course covers

You start with the basics: footwork, posture, and how to hold and swing a shinai, the bamboo sword. Each participant receives a shinai at the start of the course, and if you finish, it is yours to keep.

From there you practise the fundamental techniques, first on your own and then with a partner. All commands, technique names, and counting are in Japanese, which is how kendo is taught everywhere.

Classes are led in English, with Japanese commands and Portuguese translation available, so everyone can follow.

After the beginner course you will be ready to train in full armour, bogu. We plan to offer armour rental so that the next step does not mean buying a set straight away.

Coming to watch

You do not need to book, bring anything, or have any experience. Email or call us, then come along on a training evening and see what a practice looks like.
